It seems that the British sunshine is finally making an appearance, and just in time for the Polo season starting! With these longer days and warmer temperatures, let’s be honest, you need to put a lot more effort into keeping both you and your horses cool, calm and collected (especially during those intense chukkas!). Keeping cool is essential to not only having a good game, but also to keep healthy. In this blog we’ll showcase essential polo equipment for hot weather, to keep everyone cool and healthy during summer months.
Polo Equipment for Hot Weather - Cooling Boots
Let’s start with the polo ponies. Once these temperatures creep up, recovery becomes just as important as their performance out on the field. These cooling boots are one way you can help their legs stay fresh after those hard chukkas. You only need to immerse the boots in water between 5 and 30 minutes, during this time they’ll get colder and colder (no need to freeze!). Plus, they’ll stay cold for hours afterwards. So, you could leave the boots in a bucket of water during the game, to then be applied straight after the horse has played. Protecting tendons and aiding recovery, the boots can be applied for a maximum of 4 hours, making them suitable to travel back to the yard in. Shop the cooling boots here.
And, if you haven’t already included these Finntack Ice Wraps to your kit, now’s the time to add them for those real scorcher days we might expect to see later in the summer. Plus, they’re effective, quick and easy to use
Stay Hydrated after the Polo Game
We all know the importance of staying hydrated, but it’s so easy to forget. Always keep lots of water in your kit bag so it’s on-hand as you finish your game. As for your horse, it’s easy to underestimate just how much water they lose in the heat. Superlyte paste is one of the best ways to combat dehydration and keep your horse hydrated. Replenish electrolytes and keep energy levels where they should be during recovery.
Polo Equipment for Hot Weather - Gloves
Now, during a hot game day, you’ve got to do everything you can to stay safe and in control (we all know about sweaty hands and losing grip on those reins!). These MacWet gloves are your answer to that (if you know, you know). They’re great for keeping their grip no matter what the weather’s doing - which, in British summer, could be anything from blazing sun to a surprise shower halfway through the game.
Keeping Cool at the Yard
Back at the yard, keeping things light and cool for your pony is essential on hot days. A cooling water sheet is a must to keep your horse clean while staying cool. This sheet is lightweight, practical and breathable -perfect for the long tournament days. Simply dip it in water, wring it out until it no longer drips, and lay on top of the horse. Cooling their body temperature gently, it supports regeneration, has an anti-inflammatory effect and provides relief from insect bites.
