Polo Mallet Size Guide
Most adult polo players use a mallet between 50" and 54". The best way to choose your length is to sit normally on your pony and measure from the ground to your wrist. That measurement in inches is a useful starting point for your mallet length.
WHAT SIZE POLO MALLET DO I NEED?
For mounted polo, measure from the ground to your wrist while seated normally in the saddle. The measurement in inches is a good starting guide for your mallet length.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR POLO MALLET
Sit on your pony in your normal riding position with your arm relaxed. Ask someone to measure vertically from the ground to your wrist. Take the measurement in inches and use this as your starting mallet length. Your horse's height, your reach and personal playing preference can all influence the final choice.
PONY CLUB & CHILDRENS POLO MALLETS
Younger players normally need shorter, lighter mallets. Emita Polo Pony Club mallets are available from 42" to 49" and are made specifically for children starting in polo. Use the same ground-to-wrist measurement while the child is sitting normally on their pony.
GRASS VS ARENA POLO MALLETS
Traditional cane mallets remain the classic choice for grass polo. For arena polo, players may also choose Fibercane composite mallets, which are designed to provide a consistent feel, reduced vibration and a larger sweet spot. Your mallet length should still be chosen around your riding position and reach.
HOW TO MEASURE FOR A FOOT MALLET
Stand upright with your arm relaxed and your hand open. Measure from your open palm to the ground and round up to the nearest available length. Emita Polo foot mallets are available from 14" to 34" in one-inch increments.
COMMON POLO MALLET SIZING MISTAKES
Choosing a mallet only from the rider's height can be misleading. The height of the pony, your riding position and your individual reach all affect where the mallet head meets the ground. Measuring while mounted gives a much more useful starting point than choosing a length based on your height alone.
IS A 52" POLO MALLET THE STANDARD SIZE?
52" is a common adult mallet length, but there is no single correct size for every player. Most adult mallets fall between 50" and 54", and the best length depends on the horse, rider and reach.
CAN I USE DIFFERENT MALLET LENGTHS ON DIFFERENT HORSES?
Yes. Players may prefer different mallet lengths depending on the height of the pony they are riding. Taller horses may require a longer mallet to maintain comfortable contact with the ball.
WHAT IS I AM BETWEEN TWO MALLET LENGTHS?
If your measurement falls between sizes, contact the Emita Polo team. We can advise based on your horse, riding position and playing preference before your mallet is made.
